Dr. Anita Rivera Brown

Anita Rivera Brown, Ph.D., is an exercise physiologist with an interest in human performance, thermoregulation, and fluid balance. She is a Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine and directs the Exercise Physiology Unit at the Center for Sports Health and Exercise Sciences, which provides services to elite and recreational athletes. She is also an Invited Professor in the Graduate Program in Exercise Science at the UPR- Rio Piedras Campus.

Education
Dr. Rivera Brown has a Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, and an M.S. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Rhode Island. She is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, Member of the Sports Medicine Federation of Puerto Rico, and member of the Medical Commission of Centro Caribe Sports. She is certified as a National and International Doping Control Officer for sports competitions.

Research
Her research interests focus on physiological profiles of elite athletes, women and sports, isokinetic strength testing during rehabilitation and return to sport, and thermoregulation and fluid balance in young and elite athletes. Her lab has done and analyzed more than 1,000 on-field sweat tests in more than 20 different sports in the tropical environment of Puerto Rico in the past 25 years and established normative values for sweat loss and fluid needs of heat-acclimatized athletes.

She has been a reviewer for several peer reviewed journals and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal “Pensar en Movimiento- Revista de Ciencias del Ejercicio y la Salud” of Costa Rica and on the Editorial Board of the “Journal of Movement and Health” of Chile.
